Screamin' Eagles

Awesome Snow Trip  3/15/96

Talk about Flying with the eagles!  This month our scouts really did!  On Friday night we made our way to Westport Washington.  A starlit sky provided an inviting backdrop to the sounds of a crackling campfire and the distant crash of ocean surf lulled our troop to a restful sleep.

A brilliant morning sun greeted us.  We broke camp early and left no trace behind - not even from the fire.  We tried a few beaches nearby but found nothing suitable i.e. a wide derivable beach with little driftwood - so we headed north to the other side of Grays' Harbor.   An old haunt from previous years camping looked just right and was right next to a private campground called the Screemin' Eagles Camp.  This suited us just fine with real eagle soaring overhead and Indian carvings at every corner.

We hooked up the parasail Josh Smart had graciously loaned us to the back of Scoutmaster Steves' scout-mobile and launched our assistant scoutmaster and heavy-weight ex-marine Craig Boyd (all muscle we are told).  He had to do a running start to get up, but what a ride - flying up to a hundred feet in the air.  We launched Brenden Palmer next who had a spectacular landing followed by some kind of rooting ritual with his nose in the sand.  He was muttering something about "old Indian custom..."  Nothing damaged and all smiles - though.  Steve flew next - what a trill. True to the saying that "thems who can't - teach!" he came down a bit hard on the heels.

Justin and Jared followed without incident and the driver got better at assisting with a soft landing.  Jared touched down like an angel on wings of feathers.  On the way back up the beach for the last run, Justin though he'd demonstrate the importance of following the scoutmasters instructions about sitting well inside the back of the scout-mobile and rolled off to a hard landing in the sand.  Ben gets the high flier award.  The gentle ocean breeze was enough for him to take off and he rose the highest of all.

Brother Boyd hustled off to a successful job interview ( dedicated!) And the rest us played in the sand and surf followed an hour or so later with a pleasant drive home.
